New cards are published on the VIRTUAL CARDS section in FOCUS, this to send your “artistic” wishes to your friends… Especially if you are bored with the classical themes of snowmen’s, crystal balls and other commercial stuff! Niets belet je uiteraard om je wensen in het Nederlands op te sturen! De juffrouw spreekt ALLE democratische talen!
Beauty is one of those great mysteries of nature, whose influence we all see and feel; but a general, distinct idea of its essential must be classed among the truths yet undiscovered. If this idea were geometrically clear, men would not differ in their opinions upon the beautiful, and it would be easy to prove what true beauty is. Johann Joachim Winckelmann,1764
…there can be no rule by which someone could be compelled to acknowledge that something is beautiful… Immanuel Kant,1790
“We don’t make a photograph with a camera; we bring to the act of photography all the books we have read, the movies we have seen, the music we have heard and the people we have loved.” Ansel Adams
All the more reason you need to live a lot (even sad experiences), see much things, even taste different ingredients, smell odors… and open your heart. Like a good wine, a photographer became more subtle and deep with the age!
“When I’m ready to make a photograph, I think I quite obviously see in my mind’s eye something that is not literally there in the true meaning of the word. I’m interested in something which is built up from within, rather than just extracted from without.” Ansel Adams
As professional I’m asked a lot of times my feelings about analogue and digital photography, what are my favourite digital camera’s. Between film and digital files is the same as you ask the difference about a Steinway & Son piano and a synthesizer, or between vinyl and CD. Two different media that you really can’t compare! The main fact is of course the output or what yo’re doing with it! I can cry when I hear the interpretation of Artur Rubinstein in the second movement of the Concerto number two of Chopin and get a lot of emotions with the music of Klaus Schulze. In digital you have the total control of the photos on your fingertips. But with a pinhole camera you can make also nice artworks. And the cameras… Of course, look good at the date of this topic, tomorrow you will get other stuff that’s better! My first digital camera was a Sony Cybershot DSC-F828, with a superb Zeiss lens and superb performance. I even make a picture that I printed on a 250x100 cm format with it! The only negative point is that the time to write the files to the memory cards are too long, and you can miss other good pictures! Next, the Fuji FinPix S3 Pro, perfect camera and not as expensive as the Nikon D2X with a sensor chip that reveals a very broad dynamic range, better than with conventional chrome films. Last, the Canon PowerShot S70 for the small format to have always in my pocket but who delivers 7.0 megapixels fine images.
I don’t have words for this New Year, still very shocked by all the 150.000 dead people of the terrible tsunami of last year… But I want to communicate to all of you who comes on this site, for the first time or on regularly periods, all my best wishes for a peaceful, artistic year with a lot of fine surprises. And of course, also much, much love for every day of this year. Don’t wait to receive it but give it all around you, without restrictions, over and over again… Every smile you give will warm up somebody’s heart and it’s very more important than you can think! Feel fine in your body, feel fine in your soul and be always open to understand the misery and pain of other people, that’s also a big step to a more tolerant world. Of course you know that! And I certainly don’t want to be a predicator of what kind! So, simply: Have a very nice year 2005!
Where can you see about 150.000 works of modern art today in one museum? Answer: in MoMA, New York Manhattan, in a totally new designed building by architect Yoshio Taniguchi. First opening now Saturday 20, I’m sure take the plane to be at this event (certainly not American Airlines, such a naughty company who sends just for fun their passengers to jail!)! Showcasing art from each of six curatorial departments: Architecture and Design, Painting and Sculpture, Prints and Illustrated Books, Film and Media, Drawings and of course Photography on the third floor. Comprising some 25.000 works, MoMA’s photography collection spans the history of the medium, representing both its great creative figures and its varied applications in such fields as journalism, science, and commerce. This inaugural installation is more decisively shaped than typical surveys of the past, with the aim of exploring aspects of the medium’s history in greater depth. See you there! One of America’s most iconic magazines is back! And that’s a real good thing. Every week, LIFE Magazine returns with its signature photography and photo essays. As the most significant picture magazine ever published in the United States, LIFE portrayed American culture of the mid-twentieth century with the power of the lens. LIFE Magazine was published weekly from 1936 to ‘72, and the photo archive contains over 22 million legendary photographs and covers. Philippe Halsman, Margaret Bourke-White, W. Eugene Smith, Gordon Parks, Larry Burrows, and Robert Capa for example worked as staff photographers for LIFE. So, forget the naughty things like ‘The Bush Family’ and consorts and think that America has a lot of people with great resources and inestimable value who do great things! Find LIFE in your bookstore every WE all over the world!
Take a look at the site of Absynthe Minded, a Belgian rock group. It’s worth your attention! Very groovy design in black and red. Watch also the amazing pseudo-erotic film ‘Like, You, See‘ by Evelien Hoedekie, about a man in a jazzy bar that looses control over his psychedelic fantasy with each spicy, red drink the sexy waitress serves him. It’s great art! You, Have to, See… They used it as clip for the song ‘It could be’, both sound and animation works perfectly together. I missed the group a few days ago in the Roma in Atwerpen, an old cinema from 1928, saved from destruction by impassioned cultural fans (about 200 meters from my place!). The site is a good teaser to appetising you for more!
“We need a new vocabulary to talk about photography. Not ‘art‘ versus ‘reality‘, ‘artifice‘ versus ‘candor‘, ‘subjective‘ versus ‘objective‘. Photography falls in between these classifications, and that’s why it’s so impossible to answer questions like ‘Is photography really art?‘ and ‘Is this an accurate picture of your friend?‘ As I have said on other occasions, ‘All photographs are accurate. None is the truth!‘
These words are from Richard Avedon born the 15 may 1923 and he left us this friday! He was probably the most influential fashion photographer of the post-war era and arguably the greatest American portraitist of any epoch.
Do you know Pale Male? No? Ok, let me introduce him. He’s living on the fifth avenue in New York, on a very beautiful apartment with magnificent view on Central Park. Not far from the lodging of Woody Allen where he’s in fact very much on visits. Psychoanalyst, he is very popular in the neighbour and far behind. Every day a lot of people rich and poor, young and old comes to see him and consequently meet each other’s and talks together about life, nature, kids, responsibility and so long without any barrier or intricacy, forgetting their stress and fears… They all have one passion, he, Pale Male, spouse and spawn. Now you think he is a very expensive psy, earning very good his life having all this qualities and living in the most expensive place of New York. In fact no, he is simply a red-tailed hawk that lives there already 8 years and becomes a big star! A peculiar story and film by Frederic Lilien, a Belgian director and producer!
Saul Bass (1920-1996) was for me not only one of the best graphic designers of the 20th century but I discovered him as the absolute master of film title designs, like in the films of Martin Scorsese, Alfred Hitchcock or Otto Preminger. He invented the movie title as an art form. Before, the list of cast and crew members were so dull that the projectionists only pulled back the curtains to reveal the screen once the action of the film begins! You can now see an exposition of his work in the Design Museum (very nice site) in London until 10 October.
Now you can write comments on my topics so you can react on my feelings. I like to have your feedback. I have still to work on this script to make it better. So, give me some time, I have now a lot of photographic work!

Pierre Moeremans expresses his personality in his free creativ pictures and finds a never-ending inspiration for his images in the universal and instinctive mystique of woman. As a demanding aesthete,he personally designs and creates the décors and requisites for his pictures. The result is an image that unites Pierre's skills as a minute technician and neutral observer on the one hand, and creativity and emotion on the other. MASKES & MASKERS GIRLS & MASKS'Maskes' is Antwerp slam for 'girls'.Except of the masks, the women are naked to preserve the pictures of the fashionable time stamp and social conventions. The result is the idealisation of a woman pure of all cultural and social referees in her most clean personality and individuality. The role of the masks is multiple: they hide the face who is in our society the first reference to somebody beauty and soul. Now it's just the opposite, all attention goes to the body, the private garden of the woman but also the universal beauty of human body.On the other hand the mask gives in both ways a voyeuristic dimension, a reciprocal peep between model and observer. She is not a passive object anymore but participates in a visual communication. The pictures are enlarged maximum five times at 49x49cm, on photographic fiber paper. URBAD DREAMSLoosed in an unknown environment in the hazard of a dream. Fragile and naked, without prejudice but with the hostility of other people. The aggression of the community against the individual, the judgement will be merciless regulated by the moral standards of those in power! Like the French philosopher Sartre said: "Hell is other people!" OPEN & BLOOTSee how it is to be the star of Pierre Moeremans in his studio!
